If you are looking into being a budtender or a salesperson for marijuana and are wondering if you need a license or certification, the answer is no, at least for now.We still do not have a national licensing standard for budtenders, due to marijuana being illegal at the federal level.

Budtenders are often just normal people with a love for cannabis. Most of them are self-taught by talking to marijuana farmers, extraction technicians, edibles chefs, and other cannabis enthusiasts.
Although just because there is no national certification or licensing required it does not mean that there are no training programs out there. There are courses offered both online and courses that hold workshops, requiring your attendance. It may not be mandatory to have a certification but these courses could help land you a job easier.
Examples of these training courses include Green CulturED, the Cannabis Training Institute, and Cannabis Trainers that offer certifications showing you’ve completed their courses. Each course offers its own curriculum teaching you everything you need to know about budtending.
These courses offer anything from knowledge about various strains of cannabis, different ways to consume it, cannabis concentrates, edibles, and topical products, chemical compounds in cannabis, growing marijuana, marijuana laws, and medical marijuana and conditions it’s approved for, along with many other aspects relating to marijuana and the industry.
So, for now, there are no certifications or licenses required to be a budtender, but that does not mean that taking a course won’t help to expand your knowledge and maybe even get you a job in the industry.
