Let’s start by clearing something up…
Purchasing a smokeless ashtray is not going to magically suck up all the smoke coming out of whatever you are smoking. If you are looking for a completely smokeless session, where you can smoke indoors with very little lingering odor, you are going to need two things:
- A quality smokeless ashtray
- A sploof or smoke filter
Whenever you smoke, there are two different places that smoke comes from. There is the “cherry” smoke that comes off of your joint, blunt, whatever, and then there is the smoke that you exhale. To truly eliminate the majority of the smoke, you are going to need something for each of these different places that smoke comes from.
Having a quality smokeless ashtray is essential for removing all of the cherry smoke. They work great for that. What they will not do, is suck up all the smoke that you exhale from your mouth.
Too many people purchase a smokeless ashtray only to be disappointed by how much smoke is still lingering.
To address the smoke that you exhale, you have two different options. You can get a sploof, which is a small device that eliminates any smoke that you blow through it. Blow smoke in one end, clear air comes out the other. Simple enough.
A big downside to sploofs is that they don’t last forever, forcing you to buy replacements pretty often if you are a regular smoker. Another option is to buy a smoke filter. These devices are lined with activated carbon. They are typically a device the size of a shoe box that suck air in, purifying it just like a sploof, but on a much larger scale.
You don’t have to hold the smoke filter right up to your mouth like a sploof. Just set it on a table close to you and blow the smoke in its direction.
So, why don’t you immediately go off and purchase a quality smoke filter? Unfortunately, they don’t suck 100% of the smoke in. If you get the right one, it will definitely make a HUGE difference, but there will still be smoke that gets away from it.
So this leaves us with two different combinations that are good for different circumstances:
- A quality smokeless ashtray with a sploof
- A quality smokeless ashtray with a smoke filter
The first option will eliminate practically 100% of the smoke from your session, leaving wherever you smoked smelling fresh and clean. The biggest downside is the inconvenience of having to blow all of your smoke through a sploof.
The second option is much more relaxed and won’t change the way you have to smoke, but it also won’t filter all of the smoke. It will do a great job, and with the right products eliminate 90% of the smoke, but don’t expect it to work as well as a sploof.
Personally, I use the second set up, but I have a sploof on hand for when I need to be completely smell proof.
With that covered, let’s jump right in to the our list of the best smokeless ashtrays, followed by our recommended sploofs and smoke filters.
Top 2 Best Smokeless Ashtrays
The Holmes smoke grabber is the best smokeless ashtray on the market. The top part opens up, creating a enclosed space that will suck up any smoke that is produced inside of it. Once you open the lid, there are a few indent where you can place whatever you are smoking to allow all the smoke to get sucked up inside.
The Holmes smokeless ashtray has a removable tray that is very easy to clean. Simply remove it out, dump all of the ash into a trash can and wash off the tray.
This smokeless ashtray is battery powered, giving you the option to take it on the go.
One downside of this product is that it is directional, meaning you can only place whatever you are smoking in on one side of it. The opened lid will cover up the other. This can make it harder to use when smoking with a lot of people.
Now while this device will suck up all the cherry smoke that comes off of whatever you are smoking, remember that it won’t do a whole lot for the smoke you exhale. It will still suck up a bit of the smoke if you blow it in the direction of the ashtray, but it mainly meant for the cherry smoke. That is the reason this product does not have a 5 stars on Amazon, people expect it to suck up all of the smoke you exhale. As I mentioned above, you are best off picking up this smokeless ashtray, and grabbing a sploof or smoke filter for a completely smokeless experience.
With that being said, as far as smokeless ashtrays go, this is your best bet. It’s got the best design and is very durable.View on Amazon
The Grateful Smokeless Ashtray is another solid option. Like the Holmes above, it is lined with activated carbon to suck the smoke in.
Overall, it is not quite as powerful as the Holmes, but it still gets the job done. Where the grateful shines is in large settings. If you have a lot of people in a circle smoking, it allows everyone to have a spot they can use.
Some complaints with the ashtray are that it is a little loud. Similar to ashtray above, most of the bad reviews comes from people having high expectations of this things sucking up all the smoke in the room.
The bottom line is that if you want the highest quality, best overall smokeless ashtray, go with the Holmes above. If you want something that is great for larger groups, check out this ashtray.View on Amazon

Option #1 Smoke Buddy
Like we mentioned above, having a sploof along with your smokeless ashtray is the best way to remove all of the smoke, allowing you to smoke wherever you like with no smell.
The Smoke Buddy is the best sploof on the market. It comes in three different sizes and many different colors. It is very simple to use: blow smoke in one end, clean air comes out the other.
With the medium size you can expect to get a few hundred hits from it before it starts to get clogged up. From there you can get a few hundred more hits but it will be increasing harder to blow through.
Luckily, Smoke Buddy’s are reasonably priced so it may not be a bad idea to pick a few up, or opt for the large size.
All around the smoke buddy will work great with your smokeless ashtray to give you a smokeless and smell proof experience.View on Amazon
Option #2 Hamilton Smoke Filter
The Hamilton smoke filter is a device about the size of a shoebox that will constantly suck air in and purify it. All you have to do is blow the smoke in its direction and a good amount of it will get sucked in and purified.
Don’t expect all the smoke to go in though, especially if you take large hits. The smoke that doesn’t get sucked in right away will still be purified quicker than if you didn’t have this in your room.
Lets say you leave your room after smoking, typically it would take a few hours for the smoke to completely clear if you don’t have much airflow. With the Hamilton it will be cleared up much much faster.
The Hamilton is a cheaper option, and works really well for its price. If you are looking for a heavy duty, smoke eliminating machine, check out what we have below.View on Amazon
Option #3 Levoit 3-in-1 Air Purifier
The Levoit is much larger than the Hamilton, as well as more expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for. This smoke filter sucks air and smoke in much, much faster than the Hamilton.
One underrated benefit of the Levoit is how quite it is. Most heavy duty smoke filters are very loud and noisy, but the Levoit sucks in all the smoke you exhale in a matter of seconds, and hardly makes a peep while doing it.
All you need to do is put this next to your smokeless ashtray and blow all the smoke in that direction.
If you are a regular smoker, you cannot pass this smoke filter up!View on Amazon
