How much water to put in a bong…
It’s a problem that hits everybody at some point in their smoking career.
You finally pull the trigger and make that milestone stoner purchase: your first ever bong.
You get home, pull it out of the package, and then stop and think…
What the heck do I do with this thing?
How much water do I put in my bong??
Well, the answer to this question is actually a bit simpler than you may think. How much water to put in a bong isn’t something that’s consistent across all different pieces, it’s just something to experiment with.
The rule of thumb is as follows:
Put enough water in your bong to get a bit past the downstem slits (the downstem is the part of the bowl that sticks in your bong, the slits are the little holes in it).
This is how a bong works!
You light the bud, which is resting your bowl. Since you’re inhaling, the smoke from your weed will travel through the downstem and into the water (since you’ve filled up your bong with water past the downstem slits). The smoke passes through the water through bubbles, which act as a filter to cool your smoke, leading to very smooth hits compared to non-filtered smoke.
The water has to get past the downstem slits so that the smoke is properly filtered.
From here, it’s time to experiment.
Take a little pull from the bong. Feel good? Well, you may be fine then! There’s also a chance that when you take a hit it might be a bit harsher than you expected – try putting in more water if that’s the case.
There’s also a chance that when you take a hit it’s a bit too hard to pull from your bong. If this is the case, it could mean that there’s too much water in your piece. Pour a bit out and try again!
That’s really all there is to it. How much water to put in a bong is easy to stress over and overthink, but the truth is, it’s just something you have to experiment with.
How Much Water To Put In A Bong… With Ice?
Our readers also seem worried about the idea of putting ice in their bong.
Should you put less water in your bong if you’re putting ice in it?
Should you put MORE water in the bong when putting ice in it?
Honestly, it’s not going to make a huge difference either way. The main concern is to get your water over the downstem slits, so that the smoke is properly filtered by the water.
Whether or not ice is in there doesn’t really change that golden rule. From there just adjust as needed.
Need more of a filter? Try more water.
Need less drag on your hits (this just means that you have to inhale a bit harder than you’d prefer to get a hit)? Try less water.
It’s as simple as that. How much water to put in a bong isn’t really anything to worry over. At worst you’ll get a rough hit or two before you figure it out, but you’ll in no way be damaging your piece.
So go ahead and get to experimenting!
We hope we set you down the right path to using your new piece, and we hope you make many great memories (and maybe a couple hazy nights) with your new bong!
